The Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) started its cervical cancer screening program in 2006.
Zambia has the second highest rate of cervical cancer in the world after Guinea.
According to Dr Sharon Kapambwe, Head of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Programme in Zambia, more than 99, 000 women have been screened and of these 14, 000 were treated with pre-cancer lesions.
“Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in Zambia regardless of gender and causes more deaths in women than any other cancer. Most cases that we get are advanced and we are seeing younger women with pre-cancer lesions,” she said.
