<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">By Meluse Kapatamoyo</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Most women, if not all, dread days when they have their period. Especially for those whose flow is always heavy. While others can simply afford to change their <a href="http://menstrupedia.com/articles/hygiene/sanitary-pad" target="_blank">menstrual pads </a>or <a href="http://www.beinggirl.com/article/how-to-use-a-tampon/" target="_blank">tampon</a> a couple of times a day, others have to rely on both to avoid staining their clothing or beddings. Unfortunately for others, even using both is not enough. To address this some women are opting to use <span id="goog_86698125"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/">baby diapers.<span id="goog_86698126"></span></a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The revelation has shocked many followers of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Pokeyourmind-112111155626040/" target="_blank">Pokeyourmind </a>on Facebook who say the trend is simply disgusting and a health hazard.</span><br />

<br />
Had a wonderful time relieving memories of my trip to the United States and Switzerland when i was hosted last week at the U.S Embassy in Zambia .The meeting with people from <a href="http://www.pepfar.gov/" target="_blank">PEPFAR</a>, <a href="https://www.usaid.gov/zambia" target="_blank">USAID Zambia</a> and the U.S Department of State, put me back in focus as each question took me back to the high profile <br /> people i met, the things i learnt and what i planed to do with that knowledge. <br />
<br />
Being nominated for the 2015 <a href="http://www.internetsociety.org/file/2015-internet-freedom-fellowsjpg" target="_blank">Internet Freedom Fellowship (IFF) program</a> with colleagues from four different countries, Belarus, Pakistan, Kenya and Brunei was such an honour.</span><br />

I was amazed at how both countries are using technology and the internet to advance women’s rights. Even more impressive was that theleading organisations and institutions we visited were headed by women. I was in awe of their confidence.My biggest lesson from the many meetings we had and my interaction with the other fellows is that despite challenges, despite the negativity, continue to push with your mission in life.</span></span><br />
<span class="text_exposed_show"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />The trip has renewed my resolve to make this blog</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> & the Facebook page <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pokeyourmind/112111155626040">https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pokeyourmind/112111155626040</a> , an interactive space where more people can engage and debate on sexual reproductive health matters without fear or intimidation. <div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">A
conversation with a friend who recently underwent an operation to remove <a href="http://www.webmd.com/...fibroids/.../fibroid-tumors-what-every-woman-must-..." target="_blank">fibroids</a>
brought back memories of my own surgery a few years ago. Prior to the
operation, I had tried my best to encourage her to remain positive, remembering
my own fears when I was first diagnosed. Fibroids are abnormal growths that
develop in or on a woman’s uterus. The growths are typically benign
(non-cancerous).</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;"></span></span> </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Meluse</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">Although I
only had the operation in 2008, the diagnosis was made in 2006 after I noticed
a small growth protruding near my pelvic area. At the time, apart from the
occasional pain, it did not give me problems. But that did not prevent me from
going into research mode. I was shocked to learn that fibroids are a common
condition among women all over the world.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Not only do they come in different types, they are in different shapes
and sizes too. What’s worse is that there is very little that women can do to
prevent fibroids.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">When I went
for consultation, the doctors at Zambia’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) located
in the capital Lusaka, were <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">assuring</span> too, telling me it was a common condition
among women of child bearing age, but more importantly that successful
operations to remove fibroids were conducted regularly at the institution.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">But even with
such assurance, I was still fearful of many things. Not being able to wake up
from the <a href="http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Anaesthesia/Pages/Introduction.aspx" target="_blank">anaesthetic</a> or my wound not healing properly, so, I made the decision
not to have the operation.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">Unfortunately,
it didn’t take too long for the symptoms to start showing. My once flat stomach
started to bulge and with it came rumours that I was pregnant. In addition to
that I started to experience shortness of breath, simple activities that
required me to bend over like painting toe nails or sweeping the floor. But even
with that discomfort, I was determined not to have the operation. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">But in late
2006, tragedy struck. My father died suddenly. I was in so much emotional pain that
for the first time in my life, the thought of death did not scare me. Four
months later, my sister died, not too long after I decided to have the surgery.
I wish I could say the decision was thought out but I made it out of pain,
hoping I would not wake up from that operation.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">The D-day was
January 31, 2007. As I slept in my hospital bed the night before the operation,
I allowed my wonder. The doctors had diagnosed me with P<a href="https://sites.google.com/site/pedunculatedfibroid/pedunculated-fibroid" target="_blank">edunculated fibroids</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">These are fibroids which are attached by a stalk to the <a href="http://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps/uterus" target="_blank">uterus</a>. The fibroids had also entered my
uterus, the doctorssaid they would have to remove my uterus too. Unmarried and
without a child, I asked myself how I would feel afterwards. But being the last
born in a family of 11, I have many nieces and nephews, so my comfort was that
I would be surrounded by many children regardless.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">I had not
slept much when the nurse came in to check my temperature and my blood
pressure. Thinking I had researchedenough on the surgical procedure I was to
have, i was shocked and felt violated when the nurse said she needed to insert a <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003981.htm" target="_blank">catheter</a> (a tube tied to a bag which collects urine), as I would not be able to
go to the bathroom on my own for several days. I tried to protest but according
to the nurse, it was all mandatory for anyone undergoing such an operation. I
gave in. Unfortunately, while I waited to be wheeled into the theatre one of
the nurses noticed that the catheter was leaking, so it had to be removed and then
inserted again, this time, by a male nurse. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;"></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">I was so frustrated going into
surgery. The last thing I remember before the anaesthetic took effect was
protesting about the largenumber of people in the room.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Being a teaching hospital, when such
operations are conducted, student doctors are usually present to observe. And while
it’s understandable, I found it rather intimidating and an invasion of my
privacy but I was knocked out before I could continue complaining.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">I woke up
several hours later, mouth dry, drifting in and out of sleep but was not
allowed to eat or drink anything that day. It was only until the next day that
I began to feel the pain of the operation. In-fact my entirebody hurt, if not
from the operation located just above my pubic hairline, it was the cannula on
my right hand where I was receiving a dose of injections. My left hand hurt
too, which had a drip to replace fluids in my body because I was vomiting, so
did my buttocks where I was being given another set of injections.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">Perhaps the
worst day was when I collapsed in the bathroom after the nurse’s insistence that
I get out of bed to exercise my wound. Unfortunately, I was still weak. I don’t
remember how long I was out for but I experienced a profound moment. For the
first time, since my father’s death, there he was standing before me clear as
day light. I was on the floor reaching out to him to help me get up but he kept
pushing my hand away.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span></span></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span>I continued with
my attempts to stand up until he aggressively pushed my hand away shouting
‘shala’ which in my local language Kaonde means stay.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When I came to, the nurses were fussing over
me. My sisters and cousin who were at my bed side were in tears. It is the only
time I ever dreamed about my father.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">I spent five
days in hospital. The wound healed quickly, the most pain I experienced was the
time I had to clean it. I had to be helped to bath too, at least during the
first week after I was discharged from hospital.I was also unable to walk
straight for two weeks, afraid that I would rapture the operation. Something
the doctors assured me would not happen.A month later, I was completely back on
my feet, with only occasional pain on the wound whenever I exposed myself to the
cold.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">Years down
the line, the scar is almost non-existent (will thank my dark skin) but
seriously I believe it was mostly the expertise of the doctors. I have heard stories of people that say they have never completely healed and complain of constant back aches, headaches and pain in their pelvic area. I thank God I do not experience any of that.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">
<span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">Would I recommend
that a person with fibroids has them removed? My answer would be yes, but of course doctors will advice when and if that should happen. There are many health risk factors especially for women within child bearing age. Sometimes
fibroids can cause infertility, miscarriages and as was in my case,
increased blood flow during menstrual periods. </span></span><span style="mso-bookmark: _GoBack;"><span lang="EN-MY" style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-MY;">Fortunately for women who are menopausal, it is possible to live with them as fibroids feed on
oestrogen which is high in women of child bearing age but is low in those who
nearing menopause. </span></span></div>

</span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mulindi Mwanahamuntu</strong> : Yeast infection is a result of over growth of a fungus Candida Albicans, which is normally found in small amounts in the vagina. There are reasons why it can grow out of control e.g.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(a) Change in the acidity of the vagina caused by washing the vagina, outing detergents, powders and chemicals in the vagina, long term use of antibiotics which destroy necessary acid forming vaginal bacteria, douching, or even herbs or wearing tight or wet underwear. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(c) change in hormone profiles particularly in late stages of pregnancy when estrogens and progesterones increase including external sourced cortisones found in skin toning medicines normally used by many women to look brown </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(d) change in the immunity status whether by untreated HIV or by taking drugs that lower immunity.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind </strong>: Can it be sexually transmitted? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mulindi Mwanahamuntu</strong> : It can be transmitted by oral sex or penetrative sex although men don't usually have prolonged genital yeast. Oral sex transmission is because the mouth can have yeast, a condition called thrush or candidiasis.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Health experts say <a href="http://www.malecircumcision.org/" target="_blank">Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision</a> can reduce contraction of HIV by 60 percent. But despite the benefits, most men still shy away from the cut citing various reasons, among them pain during and after the operation. However, the belief that circumcision reduces sensitivity during sex, is responsible for much of the resistance. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">So a challenge came through from one of my readers asking me to find a man who would be willing to speak candidly about circumcision. It took me a while to find someone who was ready to speak on the issue without 'hiding' under the name of anonymous. But one person was willing to share his story after reading my notice.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Two weeks after my

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The problem was that he was not latching correctly.
He was doing “non-nutritive sucking” - he would stay at the breast for long
periods of time (sometimes more than an hour) for comfort, but wasn’t taking
much milk. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I felt a surge of pain like lightening throughout my body each time
he latched but I didn’t realize this was because he wasn’t latching correctly.
Ultimately my supply went down and he wasn’t getting enough milk which made him
very, very fussy. Our first two weeks together were miserable. <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

Zambia <a href="http://www.csosun.org/" target="_blank">Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition (CSO-SUN)</a> has called on government to

encouraging diversity in food production, aimed at improving the nutritional

<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif";">“A number
of factors have resulted in a serious deterioration of food and nutritional
security in recent years. In rural areas food insecurity is due to low
productivity, limited access to agricultural services and resources, and
over-emphasized production of hybrid maize at the expense of traditional crops.
The excessive focus on incentives to produce Maize dissuades farmers from
diversifying their cropping patterns. The lack of investment in the promotion
of other sectors other than maize has resulted in limited crop diversification,”
added Chilufya. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif";"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif";">Among
other things, the Zambian government has committed itself to reducing chronic

and financial gaps in the 5 key line Ministries which includes Agriculture and
Livestock.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span><br />

government will aim to increase <a href="http://www.unicef.org/nutrition/" target="_blank">nutrition</a> budget lines by at least 20 percent
annually for the next 10 years and also progressively encourage the involvement
of the private sector to enable access to affordable and appropriate nutritious
foods to mothers, children and other vulnerable groups.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif";">“When we think of food production, ecosystem, health and
human wellbeing, one crucial element is often not mentioned: nutrition.
Nutrition is everyone’s business and no one’s responsibility, as the saying
goes. But we know that one of the world’s greatest challenges is to secure
adequate food that is healthy, safe and of high quality for all, and to do so
in an environmentally sustainable manner,” said Chilufya. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif";">Malnutrition

because sometimes the hospital has challenges with fuel, “said Anifield. <strong>PYM</strong></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-font-kerning: 18.0pt;">Today May 23, marks the International Day to End
Obstetric Fistula under the theme “<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Tracking
Fistula – Transforming Lives. </b>It is estimated that this condition usually
caused by prolonged obstructed labour causing a hole in the birth canal,
affects two million women and girls in developing countries.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-font-kerning: 18.0pt;">Speaking ahead of the commemorations, Executive
Director of United Nations Population Fund (UNPA), Dr Babatunde Osotimehin called on countries </span><span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">to take steps to prevent
fistulas by addressing underlying medical and socio-economic causes, eliminating
gender-based social and economic inequities, preventing child marriage and
early childbearing and promoting education, especially for girls.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">He
said while tracking and treating all fistula cases was crucial, eliminating the
health crisis of obstetric fistula, requires scaling up countries’ capacities to
provide access to <span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">equitable,
high-quality sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning
and maternity care, especially </span>comprehensive<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> emergency obstetric care.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">"Obstetric
fistula highlights persistent global inequalities in access to health care and
basic human rights. Most women who develop fistula remain untreated for their
entire lives, and the condition can easily recur in women and girls whose
fistula has been surgically treated but who receive little or no medical
follow-up and then become pregnant again.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">To
address the neglected health and human rights violation of obstetric fistula, ten
years ago, UNFPA and its partners, launched
the global campaign to end fistula. Since then 47, 000 women and girls have
undergone fistula repair surgery. Partner organisations have provided treatment
to many more women and girls living with the condition.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">However,
much remains to be done, and more support and momentum are needed to enable the
Campaign to expand its reach to all corners of the world where women suffering
from fistula remain isolated and often unaware that treatment is available or
even possible.<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 12pt;">“To
treat fistula and provide women with follow-up medical care, we need to know
more about how many women and girls are in need of services and also where they
live. In most instances, stigma forces women living with the condition to
remain hidden and isolates them from families and communities. By <span style="background: white; color: #222222; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">systematically
registering and tracking each woman and girl who has or had an obstetric
fistula, we can make enormous strides in improving their well-being and
increasing the chances of their babies’ survival in subsequent pregnancies,”
explain Dr Osotumehin. <strong>PYM<o:p></o:p></strong></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-ZW" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">By Meluse Kapatamoyo</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As mentioned earlier on my facebook page, Pokeyourmind, I
will be dedicating some time to following up on topics sent in by my readers.
The subject below is one that has topped the list of requests sent in, not only
by men but surprisingly by women too. I spoke to Dr Robert Mtonga on the topic
‘Low Sperm Count’ and here is what he had to say...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> What is low sperm count?</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> It refers to the ejaculation of less than 15
million sperms per millilitre, (The normal ejaculate should contain at least
250 million sperms).</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> What are the causes? </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> There are many causes and these include
pre-pubertal state( which refers to boys before they attain puberty), disease
conditions e.g Sexually transmitted diseases, infections, abnormal growths in
the tubes<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>that conduct sperms to the
outlet,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>problems with sperm production
and storage areas, failure to ejaculate, tumours, hormonal problems, certain
medications, alcohol and tobacco use, industrial chemicals, stress and
emotional problems, poor diet, stress, <a href="http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/excess-weight-sperm-fertility/" target="_blank">overweight</a> among others.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> What are some of the known signs that someone
has a low sperm count? </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> Infertility is the obvious and commonest
tale-tell sign. Definitively however, a man needs to have a special test known
as <a href="http://www.cityfertility.com.au/fertility-services/early-fertility-treatments/sperm-test-semen-analysis/" target="_blank">Semen Analysis</a>. Semen is the fluid that contains sperms.</span> </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirK-AHPiwtvyA7nsgy28X1mxJUNFI8NcYnc2pg1DkJsc2HdPCOoRtUcjBGcUbO1fIe7lJxTpnqOTqZ7OcRu6sL3QqnyaiBu9O8CTwAZ5VM42ltWDRMLmIl1Fn4l1P7a9WUswbMX6py0MI/s1600/Bob6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirK-AHPiwtvyA7nsgy28X1mxJUNFI8NcYnc2pg1DkJsc2HdPCOoRtUcjBGcUbO1fIe7lJxTpnqOTqZ7OcRu6sL3QqnyaiBu9O8CTwAZ5VM42ltWDRMLmIl1Fn4l1P7a9WUswbMX6py0MI/s1600/Bob6.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> Depending on results from the semen analysis,
when can it be considered dangerous enough to warrant medical attention? </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> A sperm count of less than 15 million sperms is
cause for worry if coupled with infertility. A result showing abnormally shaped
sperms, less motile sperms, high fluid acidity etc. do not herald good news.
Other relative indications that send men, sometimes with their partners in tow,
include erectile dysfunction, pain on ejaculation, blood in the semen and
trauma or surgery to the spermatic cord.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> How
does it interfere with one’s ability to make a woman pregnant?</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> A low sperm count does not necessarily lead to
impotence but is one of the most common causes of it. Paradoxically a man need only
one sperm to make a woman pregnant, but chances are greatly reduced with a low
sperm count.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> Can a man enjoy sex when they have a low
sperm count?</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> Definitely. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A low sperm count does not interfere directly
with enjoyment of sexual intercourse. A man who is losing sleep over a low
sperm count obviously will not enjoy sexual intercourse due to psychological
reasons.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> What
is the prevalence rate? </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> No research has been done in Zambia on the
subject. Globally it varies from place to place depending on underlying
factors.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> What can be done to reverse this condition? </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> This depends on the underlying cause(s). The
remedy ranges from behaviour changes such </span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">as reducing
alcohol intake, losing weight, treating an organic condition, using medication
to boost the production, corrective surgery etc.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Pokeyourmind:</strong> What myths are associated with low sperm
count?</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<span lang="EN-ZW"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>Dr Mtonga:</strong> These are many and include:- marital
unfaithfulness, witchcraft and ancestral curses, weakness of the manhood, the
wife is using charms, wearing tight pants, jealousy from rivals etc. <strong>PYM.</strong></span></span>Meluse Kapatamoyohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01314607836208799485noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2040240362956658122.post-80219396080810655972014-03-26T06:55:00.000-07:002014-03-26T06:55:16.309-07:00Qualifying exam results for nurses and midwives<br />

Kapatamoyo <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I call it
the irony of life. I am standing in between the car park at the University
Teaching Hospital (UTH). On my right is the huge building housing the Maternity
Ward, and on my left is a tiny building accompanied with a little billboard
labeled APTERS. Trooping in and out of the Maternity Ward are mostly pregnant
women and relieved faces of mothers with their newly born babies, filled with
hope that their little ones will grow into healthy individuals. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">But when
I walk over to APTERS whose acronyms stand for (Appropriate Paper Technology)
and begin to shake hands with its Chairperson John Janes and Rotary Club of
Lusaka President Zarina Geloo whose organisation has come to make a donation of
wheel chairs, i quickly realise that although located within the same vicinity
and both offering services to mothers and their children, in comparison, the
maternity ward and APTERS couldn’t be more different. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">In the
background of my hosts are several children, with their guardians who include
men and women. It does not take one to be a doctor to realise that not only are
the children mentally challenged, they are physically challenged too. I notice
the anguish on one mothers face as she struggles to keep her daughter calm but
I also see smiles begin to form as we walk towards the group. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
maternity ward offers hope and dreams for expectant mothers. When their babies
are born, they leave looking forward to a day when their child will start to
speak, walk and jump around. Sadly, there are accidents during birth, perhaps
genetic or biological makeup of young children that can result in permanent
damage. The dream of seeing a child speak and walk may never happen because
they are mentally challenged to process anything or their bodies are paralysed.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">For
children and parents faced to live with this challenge, they turn to APTERS.
Although the name does not give activities of the organisation away, it is here
where the dashed hopes of mothers and children who walked out of the maternity
ward several years ago are somewhat restored. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">According
to the organisation’s Chairperson John Janes, APTERS is a small organisation of
Zambians who manufacture mobility equipment for children who suffer from
Celebral Palsy. The equipment includes walkers, tables and chairs, made from
recycled material. The organisation also provides livelihood for Zambians who
have in the past suffered from Polio. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The year 2013 ended on a celebratory note for 12 lucky individuals who were honoured as <a href="http://www.pepfar.gov/" target="_blank">PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief) </a>Zambia Champions for their work in the fight against <a href="http://www.theglobalfund.org/AIDS" target="_blank">HIV and AIDS</a>.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The champions were honoured at an official award ceremony held at the Radisson Blu Hotel on December 13, 2013.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">In August, the organization launched a contest calling for nominations of Champions from across the country to honour and recognize for their passion and tireless dedication to their communities.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">PEPFAR Country Coordinator, Kristie Mikus, had this to say about the recipients, " Each champion speaks out for those who need a voice, cares, for those who cannot care for themselves, and fights against stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">U.S Embassy's Charge' d' Affaires, David Young commended the champions for embodying the spirit of Nelson Mandela in their inspirational leadership, and thanked them for their passion and shared vision for an AIDS-free generation in Zambia."</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">
</span><br />
<div class="im">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Each champion was featured in a PEPFAR Zambia 2014 Calendar in addition to receiving a $1, 000 to donate to a local organization or community group of their choice.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Among those honoured was Sister Mariola Mierzejewska, sister-in-charge of Kasisi Children's Home. She and her staff are currently providing care and support to 250 orphans and vulnerable children, 60 of whom are living with HIV.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Anita Muchanga was honoured posthumously. She died at age 16, four years after discovering she was HIV. Rather than giving up, she continued to attend school and formed "the children's corner" where she talked openly with peers about her HIV status and provided counseling to children facing stigma, and helped them speak out. Her mother, Monica Muchanga received the award.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Other recipients on the list included; Henry Siwo and Colonel Emmanuel Daka. Every fortnight, people from kilometers(AFAR) congregate at Tithandizani ("We Help Each Other") Health Center to receive both ARVs and education about living with HIV and AIDS, led by Siwo. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">
</span><div class="im">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Colonel Daka is Commanding Officer at Zambia National Service Camp in Kitwe. He was one of the first military officers to openly discuss his HIV status and currently promotes counseling and testing among his troops, taking personal responsibility for mentoring those who are HIV positive.<br />
<div class="im">
<br />
The PEPFAR Award also went to Eunice Chikoye, a widow, who tested positive to HIV after her husband's death in 2002. A farmer, who also sells vegetables at the market to raise money for her children's school fees, after her work, Eunice walks to the clinic and reports for duty as an HIV counselor. She is a trained facilitator for HIV groups and serves as a counterpart to a U.S Peace Corps Volunteer in her community.</div>
<div class="im">
<br />
Joining her was Alex Makina, also living positively. In just two years of discovering his status, he formed 20 support groups in Mwinilunga, leading to a significant reduction in stigma against those living with HIV in the area. After moving to Mufumbwe, Alex led the formation of 45 support groups in the district. He supports group members to access ARVS, and promotes services for Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision, <a href="http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/birth-control-condoms" target="_blank">condom</a> distribution, and male involvement in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.<br />
<br />
Equally deserving of the award was Deacon Revious Chisha, who established a voluntary and testing center in Mongu. Since then, more than 8000 people have been tested for HIV and 300 orphans have received support. The deacon formed a support group for positive living with HIV, linked the <a href="http://www.who.int/hiv/topics/vct/en/" target="_blank">Voluntary Counseling and Treatment (VCT) </a>center with rural health centers, started a school to train Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC's)s in tailoring, computers and carpentry and income - generating activities.<br />
<br />
Also honored was Minerva Phiri, founder and head of Bwafwano Care Providers. For 10 years, she has helped provide food for undernourished children, nutrition education for widows and trainings on other important topics such as human rights and disputes over land. She runs workshops on HIV and AIDS and drug abuse, encourages women to get tested for HIV and has helped to protect young girls from sexual exploitation.<br />

In 2011 and at age 47, he underwent circumcision, after hearing about VMMC from his 18 year old son. Since his procedure, he now actively promotes the practice through out Zambia and in other Southern African countries.<br />
<br />
Angela Malik has set up three community-based organizations in the Ng'ombe compound in the capital, Lusaka and is also co-founder of Ng'ombe Home-Based care where she remains an active caregiver. Angela started the Kondwa ("Be Happy") Day Care Center by converting her own property, a former bar run by her late husband, into a place where orphaned children could get meals and give their guardians rest. The Pakachele Community School is a primary school where children go after they "graduate" from the Kondwa Day Care Center and the Seko (Laughter) House is a home for orphaned girls providing shelter, food, education, psychosocial care, and spiritual guidance.<br />
<br />
Paul was orphaned at 18 and formed the PAZESA Horticultural Community to assist others who find themselves in similar circumstances, working 20 years to assist OVCs and their households. Paul and PAZESA have assisted nearly 6, 000 individuals through linking support groups to a global network for people living positively.<br />
<br />
The list would have been incomplete without renowned doctor, Mannasseh Phiri, one of Zambia's leading and outspoken HIV and AIDS activists. Apart from being a columnist and hosting a radio show which tackles the complexities surrounding the disease, he addresses issues head on related to homosexuality, sex workers, <span id="goog_213428194"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/">gender-based violence<span id="goog_213428195"></span></a>, people living with HIV and adopting a rights-based approach in advocating for HIV services for all. <strong>PYM</strong></div>

according to 18 year old Solomon Nkonde “adolescents have the lowest levels of
male circumcision amongst all the age groups in Zambia. There are a lot of reasons
as to why our fellow brothers do not want to get circumcised, among them; fear
of severe pain, fear of losing sensitivity and lack of information on the
benefits and how the circumcision process is performed.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Nkonde
who represented voices of the young people at the just ended Third National HIV
Prevention Convention, added that “while other young people felt it was not
part of their culture, others wanted to know what was done with their prepuce
after it got removed. In addition, there were also </span><a href="http://www.malecircumcision.org/.../male_circumcision_communication.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">misconceptions</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> on the
motives of the sensitisers and the donors supporting male circumcision.”<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To
rebattle these myths, the youths shared various interventions that would help
scale-up male circumcision among the youth.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“Parents
should be sensitised on the importance of male circumcision so that they can
take their </span><a href="http://www.intactamerica.org/learnmore" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">children</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> for circumcision as early as birth and massive
sensitisation should be done in both rural and urban areas with young people as
role models too,” urged Nkonde.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In
addition to creating more centres for male circumcision in rural areas, the
youths called on government to train more male doctors to conduct operations as
most boys were shy to be cut by females.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
